JingOS Linux Installation Tutorial

Overview of JingOS Installation Tutorial

JingOS is a Linux distribution, which is specially designed to work with touch devices. Of course, you can install it on a normal desktop computer, but you will miss all the touch-specific functionality. In this JingOS Linux Installation Tutorial we will install JingOS on your device using a bootable USB drive or DVD.

Requirements of JingOS Installation Tutorial

Before we dive into the JingOS Linux Installation Tutorial the following preparations are needed:

  • Connect your device to a power source.
  • Ensure you have at least 4 GB of free storage space, the size of JingOS is 2.9GB.
  • A DVD or a USB flash drive containing the version of JingOS you want to install.
  • Make sure you have a recent backup of your data. While it’s unlikely that anything will go wrong, you can never be too prepared.

You can find a tutorial how to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive here. You only need to use a JingOS iso file instead of a Ubuntu one. It can be downloaded here.

Boot from JingOS DVD

It’s easy to install JingOS from a DVD. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Put the JingOS DVD into your optical/DVD drive.
  2. Restart your device.

As soon as your device boots you’ll see the lock screen:

Boot from Jing OS USB Flash Drive

Most devices will boot from USB automatically. Simply insert the USB flash drive and either power on your device or restart it. You should see the same lock screen we saw in the previous ‘Install from DVD’ step. If your device doesn’t automatically boot from USB, try holding F12 when your device first starts. With most machines, this will allow you to select the USB device from a system-specific boot menu. F12 is the most common key for bringing up your system’s boot menu, but Esc, F2 and F10 are common alternatives. If you’re unsure, look for a brief message when your system starts – this will often inform you of which key to press to bring up the boot menu.

First Boot of JingOS

The default pin for the lock screen is 123456. After entering it we see the welcome screen:

If you are not connected to the internet, you will be asked to select a wireless network, if available. We advise you to connect during the installation so we can ensure your machine is up to date. You have to agree to the terms of service:

Finally we will see the following screen.

Now we have finished the first boot of JingOS. You can choose between either installing JingOS directly, or trying the desktop first without making any changes in your device. If you like what you see we can move to the next step, the actual JingOS installation.

There is a shortcut to the installer on the desktop. When you click it the following screen will appear:
